Great Lakes Pumps has built its reputation on serving the automotive industry for more than 40 years. Our services have supplied Gusher, Process Systems/Deming Vertical Turbine Pumps, Tranter heat exchangers, and other critical process equipment for automotive applications, with particular expertise in pumps for auto body paint systems. That strong tradition continues with a recent Gusher order for the next horizon in automotive: all-electric trucks and SUVs.
Seventy-six Gusher pumps have begun shipping for a $2.2 billion dollar upgrade being made at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant for General Motors. The plant is being retooled to produce a variety of all-electric trucks and SUVs and will be the OEM’s first fully-dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant. The pumps themselves are destined for the plant’s e-coat and phosphate paint systems and the related air humidification systems.
The order is a combination of vertical 7600 Series pumps, horizontal ANSI 7071 Series pumps with cast iron base plates, and all-stainless steel 7800 Series vertical, close-coupled pumps. The 7600 and 7071 models take advantage of a design feature that speeds maintenance. The top pull out design on the 7600s (an optional feature) and back pull out on the 7071s (a standard feature) allow just the pump the rotating element to be removed, without disturbing the mounting plate or piping. The first GM all-electric truck will be a pickup with production slated to begin in late 2021.
